Design 2028 Jakaranda

This big yawl was designed to the I.O.R. Rule. She was built by Franz Maas of Breskens, Holland and launched in 1970. Her construction is interesting: stainless steel sub-frame encapsulated in foam and fiberglass. The hull and deck are cored with Airex foam. I wonder how this has held up over the years.

Here are the plans.

Dessign 628 Argyll

Image Courtesy Mystic Seaport Museum

Best described as a continuation of the Stormy Weather type, Argyll has had an interesting life. She was built by Simms Brother of Dorchester, Massachusetts and launched in 1948. She was built right on the heels of Magic Venture launched by Simms the previous year.

Think about the Bermuda Race in 1950: competing were Argyll, Blitzen, Avanti, Gesture, Bolero, Loki, Egret and Mustang. Edlu had won in 1934, Baruna in 1938, Gesture in 1946, Baruna in 1948 and now Argyll won outright and Class A in 1950.

Her race record looks something like this:
1948 Bermuda Race, last in class A of 15 yachts. (okay crew needs a little practice?)
1948 Astor Cup, 4th in a fleet of 7 yachts.
1949 Newport-Annapolis Race, 2nd place in class A of 12 yachts.
1950 Bermuda Race, overall winner in 59 starters.
1950 Kings Cup, 12th in a fleet of 14.
1950 NYYC Annual Regatta, 9th in 20 sloops/yawls over 40-Ft. rating.
1951 Newport-Annapolis Race, 8th in 17 class A yachts.

Her first owner had her for 25 years, until his death. Over numerous ownership changes through the years I can count multiple refits and restorations starting with a major refit at Hodgdon Brothers of East Boothbay, Maine in the early 70s and culminating in her most recent complete restoration by Baum & Konig of Germany in 2005. She is currently in pristine condition.

Update on OkoumeFest

My previous post was about having my Paper Jet at OkoumeFest on Kent Island, near to Annapolis. After that I received requests for the opportunity to sail her with the Turbo rig as well. I have arranged to have another Paper Jet at the event, which will allow us to have both rigs available for sailing. My own boat, the prototype will have the Turbo rig. The 2nd boat is being loaned to me by my friend, boatbuilder Howdy Bailey, and will have the Standard rig.

PJ 007 with Standard rig and PJ 001 with Turbo rig.
The two boats in the photo are the ones that we will have at OkoumeFest. This happens from 10am on Saturday 18th May on the beach at Matapeake State Park on Kent Island, south of the eastern end of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge on US Route 50.

This is a boating rendezvous, so there will be many CLC boats on the water. If you have one of our plywood boats and live within reach of Kents Island, I am sure that you will be welcome to bring your boat and to join us for a day of sailing.

Tim Severins Bamboo Raft

Like his earlier book The Brendan Voyage, which we have discussed previously, Tim Severins The China Voyage: Across the Pacific by Bamboo Raft is above all a great adventure. In it, he tells of his fascination with the legend of the Chinese navigator Hsu Fu, who, in 218 BC, set sail on a bamboo raft from Chinas Pacific coast heading east, and found, and possibly settled in, new lands. Lending credence to the story was the work of some well-respected modern anthropologists who theorized that South America had been settled, if not populated, by Chinese sailors on bamboo rafts. (The theory proceeds that the balsa-log rafts of South America were a local adaptation of the Chinese raftbuilding technology.) While the evidence for this pre-Colombian contact is not well-accepted, theres enough fragmentary and circumstantial evidence to lift the theory above the realm of crackpot pseudo-archaeology and make it an intriguing possibility to contemplate.

Hsu Fu, from The China Voyage by Tim Severin.  (Please pardon the gutter between the two pages, which I couldnt avoid when scanning.) Click to enlarge.
In The China Voyage, Severin never seems to buy wholeheartedly into the theory, but he is willing enough to accept it as a possibility, to the extent of making it the motive for another of his voyages on antique boat types. If, he reasoned, he could demonstrate that a bamboo raft was capable of crossing the Pacific, then at least the theory could not be rejected on the basis of technical infeasibility.

Unable to find any native builders of bamboo rafts in China in the early 1990s, he looked further afield and found the craft still being practiced in Sam Son, Vietnam. The Vietnamese rafts, however, were rather small and used for coastal fishing. But Chinese seagoing rafts were pretty well documented by Europeans even into the 20th century, so Severin had designer Colin Mudie use what was known about them to draw plans for a raft 60 feet LOA by 15 feet in beam. Working with the Vietnamese craftsmen, Severin had them build the raft to Mudies plans, using their own native skills.

Severins raft, which he named Hsu Fu, is shown above. The deck was composed of three layers of large-diameter bamboo, lashed together with split rattan. The bamboos were also lashed to several curved timber frames which game the boat a slight amount of deadrise. The bamboos were bent upward somewhat at the bow, helping the boat rise to waves. Rattan hogging trusses above both gunwales were intended to stiffen the structure fore-and-aft, but in fact they seem to have been largely ineffective, and they broke frequently.

Deck layout of Hsu Fu.
Propulsion was three Chinese lugsails, each (of course) on its own mast, totaling 800 square feet. Several daggerboards could be raised and lowered between bamboos, both to limit leeway and to alter the direction of sail by changing the center of lateral resistance. A steering oar was also used. Even so, the rafts windward sailing ability was severely limited.

Severin praised Hsu Fus seakindly motion, however, saying that it was the most stable boat he had ever sailed on. With essentially no freeboard at all, waves actually washed through the rafts structure, between the bamboos. And while this made for a constantly wet ride, it also meant that, to an extent, the vessel did not follow the surface of the sea as it sloped this way and that, but remained more nearly level instead.

The structure was also flexible. With very little to stiffen it fore-and-aft, the only way that a craft made of such materials could survive was by flexing as it rode the waves. (I acknowledge that this contradicts the notion of stability as described in the previous paragraph, and this is due to my own lack of understanding. Perhaps it was the short choppy stuff that passed through the structure, while the deck conformed overall to the shapes of the swells.) The raft rode through several bad storms and, except for being constantly wet, the crew were fairly comfortable, because of the rafts easy motion.

Severin, his crew and Hsu Fu traveled 5,500 miles in 105 days at sea, making it most of the way across the Pacific before the raft began to break up due to the rattan lashings rotting. (They were about 1,000 miles from landfall in the Americas when they abandoned ship to be picked up by a passing vessel.) Even so, Severin felt that the experiment was successful in demonstrating the feasibility of a bamboo raft-bound migration to the western hemisphere, noting some mitigating factors, including that his expedition began in Vietnam, which added several hundred miles to the voyage compared to the theoretical start in China. My personal conclusion is that while it wasnt great science, it was a great adventure in a well-written book.

Well look at some more Chinese bamboo rafts in the next post.

What Moves Your Boat in Bangladesh

Reader Deek Rose steered me toward his video of boats in Bangladesh.

The footage in Always a River to Cross was shot in 1996 and 1998. The works title obviously refers to the geography of Bangladesh, which is essentially a huge delta of the Ganges and Brahmaputra rivers. Getting anywhere in Bangladesh, especially during the wet season, usually involves water transport.

What struck me most about the video -- aside from the beauty of Roses photography and the skill of his editing -- was the variety of propulsion methods used on traditional boat types. There are several types of oars, oar pivots, and styles of rowing; poling; paddling; spritsails of more than one type; stern sculling; inboard engines; and engine-powered towing.

There are also fascinating boat types to note and some footage of boatbuilding activities. Overall, a fine video. Thanks for sharing, Deek!

Very Old and Very Even Older Boats

In two separate articles this week, archaeologists revealed evidence of extraordinarily old seafaring -- Bronze Age, and Stone Age.

As reported in the Telegraph, the cargo from a 3,000-year-old shipwreck was discovered a few hundred yards off Englands Devon coast. The find consists of 295 artifacts: 259 copper ingots, 27 tin ingots, a bronze sword, "two stone artefacts that could have been sling shots," and three gold wrist torcs (bracelets). No trace of the vessel itself has been found, and probably none ever will be, but the find gives clear evidence that sophisticated trade networks existed in Europe during the Bronze Age. The bronze ingots almost certainly came from the Continent, while the tin may have come from other parts of the Continent, or from elsewhere in Britain. Either way, the quantity of material is a clear indication that merchants were aggregating materials and trading in bulk over long distances by sea. The shipwreck, in a bay near Salcombe, may have occurred at the very end of a cross-Channel voyage, or in the midst of a coastal trip. (The photo, from the Telegraph, shows one of the gold torcs in situ.)

Regarding the boat itself, the article states, "experts believe it would have been up to 40ft long and up to 6ft wide, and have been constructed of planks of timber, or a wooden frame with a hide hull. It would have had a crew of around 15 and been powered by paddles." Im not aware of evidence of true plank-built boats in Europe from the boats estimated age of 900 BC, but the newspaper reporter may have been simplifying things. More likely, I think, would have been something similar to the Dover Bronze Age Boat, which Ive written about previously. This was a transitional technology, between the dugout and the plank-built boat, in which logs where hewn into shapes that constituted longitudinal sections of a boat, then joined together with a combination of wedges and sewing with withies. Cross-Channel use of the Dover boat has been speculated, and now we see that Cross-Channel trade was in indeed process at a time not more than about 600 years after the Dover boat -- plenty of time for the elaborate trade networks to have been worked out.

But thats a mere yesterday compared to exciting but indirect evidence of European seafaring some 130,000 years ago! Thats not a typo, and its more than double the age of the previously earliest evidence of seafaring anywhere: that of the original settlers of Australia some 60,000 years ago. According to an article in the New York Times, archaeologists have found hundreds of stone tools on Crete that have been provisionally dated to at least 130,000 years old. Given what is known about sea levels at the time, the conclusion is that the people who first settled Crete must have done so by boat. Of course theres no direct evidence of the boats themselves, but they sure didnt swim! And what fun it is to speculate about the boats that our hominid ancestors were capable of conceiving and building with the simplest of tools.

Aboard Fiona in St Martin

April 10pm

I always say that the hardest part of a cruise is the first couple days. These are the very necessary transition period where you let go of the astonishingly comfortable life we normally live onshore, and gradually adapt to the much smaller, usually uncomfortable, and sometimes bumpy life aboard ship.

I first learned this fact of cruising life upon leaving Steinhatchee, FL, at the start of a very long sail back to New York. Not only did it come to me as a surprise, not only did I not enjoy the experience, I resented it. I rebelled against it. I fought it.

It was only after going through the same experience, again and again, every time I set sail again in the  Blue Moon after a break ashore, that I realized it was part of sailing. Something that needed to be dealt with. And the easiest way to deal with it was to give in to it. To grieve for the comforts of land, and then to get over it.

Watching Helena struggle to adapt to life onboard Fiona again just confirms my theory that this is a universal feeling. I even suspect Eric suffers from it. Just a little.

What do you think? How long does it take you to get into the cruising life?

Anyway, we arrived in St. Martin after a very early flight, and Ive imbibed my first rum drink. If its 5 pm, it must be happy hour.

Ah.... the cruising life!
Well have two days to enjoy St. Martin, Eric tells us. Thats great, because it looks like a beautiful Island. Cant wait to get out there tomorrow.

Meanwhile, wheres my second Fiona cocktail???

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We arrived with a BANG!
Sorry to start with such forceful title, but it has been amazing since pretty much after lunch.
Flight AA 1569 arrived 10 minutes earlier than expected and as soon as we deplaned the smell of the airport hit me. The lovely, nostalgic smell drew me back to memories of Singapore, where I lived from 2000 to 2002. John told me that is was probably mildew. Hahahaha, he was right. We waited for our luggage to arrive, walked through Customs, and saw Captain Eric waiting for us in the main arrival hall. Hed trimmed his beard, had a nice suntan, and looked not a day older since we last saw him in Brazil.
Walking outside I got hit again, this time by a wave of heat that I have been longing for since last August. Immediately, I felt overdressed in jeans and short sleeve t-shirt. Fantastic!
The airport was on the Dutch side of the island, but 15 minutes later, the cab wished us into France, or at least the French side of St. Martin.
While driving to Fiona, Eric outlined his sailing plan. We will leave Saturday after lunch for an overnight sail to the Virgin Islands. What? That was not part of the deal… BANG!
I started to panic. No, I don’t want to do this… What about the pirates in the Caribbean that my father had warned me about?  What about getting run down by run away cruise ships? Monster oil tankers? Getting kidnapped and sold into slavery in some South American country???
Ok, John calmed me down. He lightly suggested we use the next couple of days to get used to the boat and to let go of our mutually exclusive hangups.
Fiona was moored at very posh and nice marina. Gleaming white super yachts lined the docks on either side. Boat boys polished already shiny plastic. Marina workers in crisp uniforms practically saluted as we walked by. And there was Fiona, just as I remembered her. But what was this? An 8-foot plank leading from the dock to Fionas stern? I have to walk across that??? I am not making this stuff up. John and Eric managed somehow to carry our two heavy bags across the gangplank without falling off. After a moments hesitation, I tottered across behind them, and breathed a sigh of relief when I grabbed Fionas stern rail. Thats when Eric suggested we go out for lunch.
Crossing the gangplank
Lunch was in a French patisserie… oh, I love everything French. The people look so sophisticated, well dressed, the food is great, the wine flows freely and the men and women are beautiful.
Very informal French restaurant
Back on Fiona, we still have to unpack. I made a mess of my stuff already while looking for flip-flops and sunblock.
Ummm... did I really need all this stuff?
Out on deck, John and I hung the tarp over the cockpit, just like in the old days, and we are now relaxing in delicious shade, watching million-dollar boats sail in and out of the marina, waiting for the 5 o’clock happy hour (with double rum portion) and nice dinner in town. Probably at some nice French restaurant. Again.
Love this island.
The marina
By the way, we arrived to a nice surprise: nice washed clean bunk mattress covers. Thank you Captain!
The Winter Boat Show Season Is Red-hot
It appears counterintuitive that winter is the best time on the year to purchase a new boat or individual watercraft. But those that wait till late spring or summer to create their purchase typically are disappointed to learn that the new vessel they want is sold out.
According to Bryan Seti, national marketing and advertising manager for Yamaha Motor Corp., that is because in terms of acquiring a brand new boat or private watercraft, buying early gets the very best offers.
"This past year, we sold out of our best-selling WaveRunners [personal watercrafts] prior to the July four weekend and our most inexpensive WaveRunner, the VX110, was practically sold out in June," Seti said. "Its harder for customers to discover a deal when supply is the fact that low."
Seti says that getting a boat or private watercraft at a winter boat show will guarantee that you simply discover the boat you need simply because dealers are motivated to sell.
"Our dealers are receiving their 2006 orders now and these units take up a great deal of space at the dealership," said Seti. "Dealers tend to get motivated after they see a crowded sales floor."
The nautical specialists at www.BestofBoating.com supply the following guidelines to help you get ready for a winter boat show:
* Keep focused. If you are seriously shopping in the show, you could possibly not want to bring the little ones. Your complete consideration is needed when closing a deal.
* Consider on your feet. Put on comfy shoes which might be simple to get rid of so it is possible to climb aboard the exhibits. Your feet will thank you at the end from the day.
The Green Bridge of Wales
 Its been a while since Ive got the boat out, almost three months in fact, my longest dry spell.  A few reasons.  The obvious one being the weather, Ive also had and still have an elbow injury, and simply a lack of enthusiasm.  Finally however halfway through April, for one day only, it feels a little like Spring.  After a 5am wakeup call I join James, Gareth, Marcus, Simon, Gerwyn and Gary for a long awaited trip along the southern Pembrokeshire Coast.
A low water launch from Freshwater West makes for a very long carry.  Notice those who brought trolleys have began to launch while Gerwyn and myself carry our heavily laden boats the entire distance of the beach.
James above breaks through the surf to the calm waters beyond to begin our trip, which will eventually see us finishing at Stackpole Quay.
Almost this entire trip is within the military firing range, notice the various military buildings above the sands.
Around Linney Head and the limestone cliffs rise steeply out of the water preventing any chance of escape from the elements of the sea for quite some miles ahead.  What a fantastic start to the journey...
James clearly dwarfed by the 350 million year old rock.
Various stacks and arches reached out into the sea up ahead.
A gentle swell allowed us to get up close and explore the nooks and crannies while allowing for a little fun...
Time to explore some caves and this one was absolutely huge and passed right through the cliff.
Above Simon waited patiently beneath this huge overhang, clearly waiting for a few subjects for a photo opportunity...
..And what a photo it made!  A natural iconic landmark of Pembrokeshire usually photographed from above, The Green Arch of Wales.
You may have to look very closely in some of todays pictures to spot the kayakers dwarfed beneath the huge towering cliffs.
Just beyond the Green Bridge tower the Elegug Stacks...
I struggled to get a good shot of the stacks because they were so huge so I paddled quite a way out to get this shot above, again spot the kayaks.
This section of coast just kept giving and giving.  This narrow causeway was spectacular, again rising high out of photographic reach.
It then led into a cave like entrance.
 Looking back I dont know really what to call it, a causeway within a collapsed cave?
Further along Marcus spots a cave but paddling in reveals its a collapsed cave (cave without a roof) with emerald green waters.
Further along the coast is Huntsmans Leap, where tradition has it that a horseman jumped the gap, only to look back and die of shock from what he saw.
You can spot the kayaker, Gareth, above but can you spot the two climbers?
A short distance in a small cove is St Govans Chapel, built in the 13th Century on a site of a holly well that once attracted pilgrims.
Around St Govans Head we make our way into Broad Haven for a long awaited lunch stop, by now I had my breakfast 9 hours ago.
Back on the water in the bay of Broad Haven with Church Rock on the horizon.
It was only a short paddle to Stackpole Head and we were able to pass though two of the caves through the headland, popular with nesting sea birds.
We glide now through glassy waters in the afternoon sun past the beautiful Barafundle Bay and though this sculptured small arch and onto our destination at Stackpole Quay.
We finally land after 5 hours on the water at Stackpole Quay, originally built for the export of Limestone for a nearby quarry.  We get out of our damp kit and relax in the sun outside the tea room with a warm drink.
I take a short stole up the coast path with superb views to the east as far as Caldey Island near Tenby while the rest of the group go back to pick up the cars.
A track our our paddle off my phone app which I usually use for mapping my running and cycling but seems to work well with the paddling also.  A brilliant paddle once again made all the better for the great company. Not quite sure if it beats the Witches Cauldron paddle but definitely up there with the best.
